What the Wheel of the Year is

The Wheel of the Year is a modern calendar of eight seasonal festivals. Four of them are astronomical: the two solstices, when the sun reaches its highest and lowest, and the two equinoxes, when day and night are equal. The other four fall roughly halfway between, on the old cross-quarter days that once marked the start of each season.

Each festival carries a mood: letting go at Samhain, rest at Yule, first beginnings at Imbolc, balance at Ostara, vitality at Beltane, fullness at Litha, the first harvest at Lughnasadh and gratitude at Mabon. You do not need to follow any tradition to use them; they are simply good moments to pause and take stock as the year turns.

Solstices and equinoxes move by a day from year to year, so Taromi calculates them for every year rather than printing a fixed date. South of the equator the seasons are reversed, so every festival arrives half a year later: switch the hemisphere above and the wheel turns with you.
