A doorway between what's ending and what's next
Samhain Tarot Spread
Five cards laid out like a doorway — two posts and a lintel — for the night the old year turns and the line between seasons runs thin.
- Five cards in a doorway: two posts, one lintel
- Free while it's in season, Premium the rest of the year
- For the turning of the year, not contact with the dead
How the Samhain reading works
Free while Samhain is in focus
Samhain is Premium like every seasonal spread, but the festival closest on the wheel is open to everyone — in the Southern Hemisphere that means around 1 May instead of 31 October.
Five cards, laid as a doorway
Two cards climb the left post, one sits as the lintel across the top, and two come down the right post — the shape of a threshold you're standing in.
Read it once, at the turning
Draw it around the festival itself, or any night the year feels like it's turning for you, then let it sit rather than redrawing it.
What Samhain is, and when it falls
Samhain marks the end of the harvest and the start of the dark half of the year — the oldest of the wheel's eight festivals, sitting exactly opposite Beltane. In the Northern Hemisphere it falls around 31 October; in the Southern Hemisphere, where the seasons run in reverse, the same point on the wheel lands around 1 May.
Because Samhain sits on a fixed calendar date rather than a solstice or equinox, it does not need to be recalculated year to year the way Yule, Ostara, Litha and Mabon do — it falls on the same night every year, in whichever hemisphere you are reading from.
The Wheel of the Year page tracks which festival is currently in focus and counts down to it, and the whole picture shifts six months when you switch between hemispheres.
What each position in the doorway asks
What Is Ending and What to Release form the left post: the first asks you to name a cycle, habit or chapter the cards suggest is genuinely closing, and the second asks what you are being invited to let go of to meet it well.
Message Across the Veil sits as the lintel overhead — not a claim of contact with anyone who has died, but a reflection or a piece of remembered wisdom the season tends to surface, from your own past or from people you carry with you.
What Your Roots Give and What to Carry Forward come down the right post: a strength inherited or learned that you can lean on now, and the one seed worth carrying into the dark half of the year ahead.
Free while it's the festival in season
Every Wheel of the Year spread is Premium, but the festival nearest on the calendar — in either hemisphere — opens to everyone for free while it is in season. When Samhain is that festival, the full five-card reading is free; the rest of the year, a Premium preview shows its first card.
This keeps the wheel itself free to explore all year: whichever festival is closest is always the one you can read in full, and the other seven stay a Premium option for whenever you want to go deeper.
Using the Samhain reading well
This is a night for honest reflection on endings, not a séance — treat Message Across the Veil as your own memory and intuition surfacing, not a channel to anyone who has died.
Read the five positions as tendencies worth sitting with over the following weeks, not a fixed script for how the dark half of the year has to go — cards describe a direction, not a guarantee.
If you want a wider view of the year before narrowing to this one night, Tarot Reading 2026 covers the year as a whole alongside Samhain's doorway into its turning point.
Questions, answered
When is Samhain?
Around 31 October in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, where the seasons are reversed, the same point on the wheel falls around 1 May.
Is the Samhain tarot spread free?
It's free whenever Samhain is the next festival on the wheel, in either hemisphere. The rest of the year it's a Premium spread, and a Premium preview shows you its first card before you decide.
Do I need to be pagan or Wiccan to use this spread?
No. The Wheel of the Year is used here as a seasonal frame for reflection, open to anyone regardless of belief or practice.
Can I do the Samhain reading on a different day?
Yes — the doorway works for any night your own year feels like it's turning, not only 31 October or 1 May exactly.
Does this reading contact anyone who has died?
No. Message Across the Veil reads as your own memory, intuition, or inherited wisdom coming to the surface — never as literal contact with the dead.
How is this different from a general reading like the Celtic Cross?
The Celtic Cross is built for any question you bring it. This spread is built specifically for Samhain's themes — endings, release and what carries forward — and its five positions stay fixed to that.
What happens to the reading once Samhain is no longer the closest festival?
It goes back to Premium, like every other seasonal spread outside its season — you can still open it as a preview, or unlock it in full.
