Meaning

Pictured with scales in one hand and an upright sword in the other, Justice weighs a situation without flattering anyone, including you. It points to looking at things as they actually are, with the inconvenient facts included rather than set aside.

The card is also about accountability, which cuts both ways. You are responsible for your part and not for everyone else's, and getting that line right often resolves more than any further discussion would.

Decisions made under Justice tend to hold, because they are made on grounds you can still defend in six months. It is a slower way to decide and a more durable one. A note on numbering: this deck follows Rider–Waite–Smith, where Justice is XI and Strength is VIII. Traditional Tarot de Marseille decks put them the other way round, Justice VIII and Strength XI; Waite swapped the pair in 1909 to fit the Golden Dawn's astrological order.

Reversed

Reversed, Justice can point to an imbalance that people feel but have not named — one side carrying more than its share in an arrangement that holds only because it has not been stated plainly.

It can also describe a judgment made with a thumb on the scale — a conclusion reached first and the reasons assembled afterwards. The corrective is simple and uncomfortable: write down what you would need to see to be wrong.

Reversed Tarot Cards: How to Read Them

Justice in relationships

In relationships, Justice favors fairness in the small daily arithmetic: who does what, who gives way, who apologizes first. It suits an honest review of whether the balance still works for both people, held without blame.

Justice in work

At work, Justice suits contracts, reviews, agreements and any situation where terms need to be clear. Read the detail, say what you need, and put it in writing. This is general reflection rather than professional advice — for anything binding, take proper counsel.

Advice

Look at the whole picture, including the part that does not favor you, and decide from there.

Justice: yes or no?

In a yes-or-no reading the card’s orientation carries the answer. This is how Justice leans each way — the same verdict the one-card yes-or-no spread gives.

  • Upright

    Yes

Justice leans yes when the facts are weighed honestly and the terms are fair.

  • Reversed

    No

Reversed, Justice leans no, suggesting an imbalance or a detail that still needs to be weighed.
