How to read the Major Arcana

Read in order, the Major Arcana are often described as the Fool’s journey: The Fool sets out, meets teachers and tests, loses footing at The Tower and arrives, changed, at The World. The story is a reading aid rather than a rule, but it helps to know where a card sits in it. This deck follows Rider–Waite–Smith numbering, with Strength at VIII and Justice at XI.

In a spread, a Major Arcana card usually carries more weight than the Minor cards around it — a sign that the question touches something bigger than the day-to-day. Several of them together often mark a period of real change. Reversed, a card’s theme tends to be blocked, delayed or turned inward rather than simply negative.
