Meaning
Strength shows a lion calmed rather than defeated. Nothing has been overpowered; something wild has been met with enough patience that it settles. That is the card's whole argument about how difficult things are actually handled.
It appears when a situation is testing your composure more than your ability. The skill required is not cleverness but the willingness to stay steady while the problem is still unresolved, and to keep your tone even when it would be easier not to.
Applied inwardly, the card is about the parts of yourself you find hardest to like, which tend to respond better to patience than to harsh discipline. (In Rider–Waite–Smith decks, Strength is numbered VIII and Justice XI, reversing the older Tarot de Marseille order that Waite changed in 1909 to match the Golden Dawn's astrological sequence.)
Reversed
Reversed, Strength often points to patience that has run out after holding steady for a long time. When the reserve is empty, it can show up as a shorter temper or a sudden urge to force the issue, calling for rest rather than more willpower.
It can also describe courage undermined by self-doubt — the capability is there, but you have stopped believing in it. Evidence helps more than encouragement: look at what you have already handled.
Strength in relationships
In relationships, Strength favors patience with someone's rough edges, including your own. It suits a difficult conversation handled gently, or a bond that deepens because neither person flinched. Softness here is a choice, not a weakness.
Strength in work
At work, Strength suits a demanding stretch, a difficult colleague, or a role where composure matters more than speed. Calm is the real contribution here: holding your position without raising your voice carries more weight than trying to overpower the room.
Advice
Stay gentle and stay long; that combination moves more than force does.
Strength: yes or no?
In a yes-or-no reading the card’s orientation carries the answer. This is how Strength leans each way — the same verdict the one-card yes-or-no spread gives.

Upright
Yes
It leans yes through patience and steady composure.

Reversed
No
